Me = Stoopid
Oct. 18th, 2007 12:11 pmApparently to get really good at doing costuming, I would need like some kind of chemical reaction education.
Ziggy is going to (hopefully) be Alice from R.E.2 so she needs the olive fishnet shirt. Fabric like that doesn't exist to be bought anywhere I can find. I got _really_ lucky tho and found an oversized sweater with a pattern to it that looks like fishnet. The problem is it's hot pink and peach. I do some research and find out that ramie, the fabric it's made of, can be bleached and dyed successfully. Awesome, right? So I spend like 3 hours bleaching the sucker out, then another 1 1/2 hours dying it olive. Well, the color is ok, but not dark enough. An old trick I've used plenty of times before when dying fabric is to rinse it in vinegar because it helps set the color. Then I'll just dye it again, right?
Oh, except that apparently vinegar causes ramie to breakdown. Harsh chemical like bleach doesn't, but regular old kitchen vinegar make the thing fall apart at the slightest touch, as if it were a century old or something. So now I'm back to square one with this damn thing and need to find another shirt that looks right. Damned touchy fabric >,< I'm so mad at myself now.
